Overview

Germany’s geography is a myriad of majestic mountains, rolling countrysides, and cosmopolitan cities.

Germany’s geography—a myriad of majestic mountains, rolling countrysides, and cosmopolitan cities—makes rail travel highly convenient—and captivating. There’s an abundance of places worth a visit, including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, and Frankfurt. All are interconnected by an efficient hi-speed train system that also includes Frankfurt airport. So you can easily transfer from your transatlantic flight to cities in a 300-mile radius—that’s less than 2 hours ! Other European connections are readily available, including Paris, Brussels, Vienna, and Zurich.

German’s ICE (Inter City Express) train is renowned not only for its speed, but for its high-tech and outrageously comfortable accommodations as well. We give an enthusiastic “Yes !” to First Class, with its large, plush leather seats. Plus, the newest ICE trains also feature individual video entertainment systems, and a glass separation between the driver’s cabin and the passenger area. So you can head to the front of the train to truly experience a rail ride (at 186 mph !) like no other. ICE trains also contain a traditional restaurant-car where you can enjoy a warm meal on a dressed table.

City Night Line, Germany’s night trains, are also world-famous. These “hotel on wheels” offer private rooms with bathroom facilities and showers. One night’s sleep will take you anywhere in Germany and even as far as Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, and Vienna.

Some German trains require a reservation which you should purchase in advance. And all are connected to regional trains should you want to further explore the country (highly recommended). Reservations, when available, are included when you purchase a ticket from Rail Europe. If you purchase a pass, you must purchase your reservation separately.

  • Great train trip from Paris |
"I purchased a first class ticket to travel from Paris to Stuttgart and was very pleased with the coach and seating. It was quite comfortable and included a service to purchase food items and have them delivered to my seat. This was especially nice since I was traveling alone and didn't have to leave my seat. "

"I enjoy the journey by train rather than Air as for a similar price and length of total journey you get to see alot more. I found the staff very pleasant and friendly "

    Poor Advice |
"Having not used this service before and being a foreigner we saw the advice on printed Thalys ticket that "for safety reasons, your presence on the Thalys platform is mandatory at least 2 minutes before the train's departure and assumed the process would be simple. However, when we got to the Gare Nord station and were directed by locals to a lift (we had baggage and my wife had hurt her back after slipping on ice in Switzerland) we got stuck at turnstyle type entry as our printed Thalys "ticket" did not get us through. We were severely delayed as locals tried to help (even holding ticked over scanner, etc.) and communication was difficult (we do not speak French). By the time we were redirected to another entrance that did not require turn-style access (I assume the first access we were directed to by locals was for Metro and not Thalys train) we had missed the train. We were then forced to by new tickets at Euro 130 each (Euro 90 for my under 26 year old daughter) ! The original tickets cost Euro 20 ! (hence my rating of 5 stars for "Value for money). At the price of Euro 130 each I would have flown and not take the train, but had no options at that point. Thankfully the train trip itself was most pleasant and relaxing with access to WiFi while we drank a bottle of red French wine to drown our sorrows. "
